Full-Stack Developer — Open Source Web Platforms

Role Summary

Automattic is looking for a versatile Full-Stack Developer to work across WordPress.com, WooCommerce, and modern Gutenberg publishing tools. As an entirely distributed team, we value clear written communication, autonomy, and passion for the open web.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop modern block editor features and REST/GraphQL APIs across PHP and JavaScript/TypeScript stacks.
• Write modular, well-tested code that adheres to open source WordPress coding standards.
• Collaborate asynchronously using P2 boards, GitHub issues, and Slack.
• Triage bugs and support high-volume merchant and publisher experiences.

Qualifications & Requirements

• 3+ years experience with PHP, modern JavaScript (ES6+), and React.
• Deep understanding of relational databases (MySQL) and RESTful API architecture.
• Demonstrated ability to produce well-documented code asynchronously.
• Comfortable with Git workflows, automated testing, and continuous integration.

Preferred Qualifications

• Contributions to WordPress core, plugins, or open source projects.
• Familiarity with containerized development environments using Docker.
